Prostate Cancer: Signs & Symptoms

March is Prostate Cancer Awareness month, and with prostate cancer being the most common cancer in the UK affecting men, we have taken a look at the signs and symptoms to look out for.

What is the prostate?

The prostate is situated between the penis and the bladder, and it is a small gland. It’s main function is to assist in the production of semen.

What are the symptoms?

There are certain symptoms to look out for, but typically symptoms do not present themselves until the cancer has grown large enough to put pressure on the urethra. These symptoms include:

– Needing to urinate more often
– An immediate urge to rush to the toilet
– Difficulty or straining when urinating
– Weak flow when urinating
– A feeling that your bladder has not been emptied fully

Does anything increase the risks of developing prostate cancer?

Certain factors, such as age, can increase the risk of developing prostate cancer, with most cases being diagnosed in men over 50 years old.

Family history can also be a contributing factor when assessing the risk of prostate cancer, so if you have concerns, and have had a brother or father develop prostate cancer, speak to your GP. Research also shows that certain ethnic groups are more commonly affected by prostate cancer. Contact alldaychemist
